Objective Truth: The First Stop on the Road to Perpetuating and Sustaining Society

In the last post, I ended it with a question, where do we find objective truth? I also suggested that if it was to be found, it may be what sets us free. But what does that mean? Free from what?

I intend to write a series of posts and take a detailed look at what Truth is and why I think it leads to freedom (intellectually and spiritually) to sustain and perpetuate society.

The first step is to understand objective truth. Let’s begin by defining the terms:

Objective = expressing or dealing with facts or conditions as perceived without distortion by personal feelings, prejudices, or interpretations (Merriam-Webster)

Truth = the property of being in accord with fact or reality (Merriam-Webster)

Per this definition, objective truth requires acknowledging what is real or factual and not distorting it with a false reality. This makes sense. In fact, true scientists “do science” with this in mind. They are required to observe and acknowledge what is factual or real. Then try to explain these realities through a set of hypotheses (theories) to prove (explain) how these realities came to be, which is what the Scientific Method is. In essence, science attempts to explain what’s already objectively true.

So far, we agree that objective truth must exist. This is important because, without a fundamental understanding of reality, anyone can make up their own, live a life of confusion, and even worse, a lie. Acknowledging reality is the first step to accepting Truth. But this is not where we are today. In the last 10 to 15 years, it seems as though the social modern world has taken a drastic turn. Fundamental values that were important to sustain a society all of sudden started to end.

One fundamental value that changed, in my opinion, was the recognition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. It started with the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 2013. DOMA was passed by the 104th Congress in 1996. A mountain of lawsuits ensued in the following years against states that did not provide licenses to same-sex couples, culminating with one Supreme Court case (United States v. Windsor) in 2013 that decided DOMA's unconstitutionality.

Now, why do I think marriage is an important and vital fundamental value for a society to function optimally? One of many obvious reasons: Procreation.

Without the procreation of a biological man and biological woman, or at least without their biological reproductive functions, society ceases to exist. This fundamental objective truth can never be debunked nor denied. And modern cultures try to suppress this truth through ideological garbage and deny its objectivity. In fact, you must question your existence if you think otherwise.

You may be surprised, but I agree with same-sex couples having equal legal protection under the law (this is besides the moral implication of homosexuality, which is a sin). WAIT, WHAT? Yes! Just as I agree that for a majority of citizens dealing with legal custody issues, financial and civil disputes, and many other types of scenarios dealing with legal issues, everyone must be protected under the law. For married couples, specific laws apply only to them. For example, dealing with their spouse's finances after they die or medical health decisions if one of them isn't able to. This is why DOMA was challenged at the Supreme Court level. And if we are to follow logic, we must accept this as a valid argument.

However, just because something is logically valid, does not mean it cannot violate a fundamentally moral value or purpose.

And this is where the rubber meets the road. To what extent are personal lifestyles and values allowed to override those that are vital to sustaining an optimally functioning society? I would say that the higher purpose is to elevate the traditional family unit between heterosexual couples for the purpose of procreating and stabilizing society (as a start). But arguments against this truth are enough for many Christians to get off the road, park their cars, and want to be left alone. They don't know how to intellectually deal with it. But if Christians are to learn how to discern reality, they must start proclaiming the Truth.

Truth never gets off the road. Truth maintains its speed despite modern culture's ideological road hazards that may lurk ahead. Truth never gets distracted by the scenic views of lies either. Rather, Truth sets the pace for others to follow. I hope we all find Truth from our self-paved roads and get in line with reality.
